Gandhi 150thBirth Anniversary Celebration

The Centre has celebrated the 150thBirth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi with great fervour during 1st to 6thOctober 2019. The Centrehas organized various programmes & activities for school children with scope to learn about Gandhiji’s life and his work. The teachings of the father of Nation are so very relevant even today that people especially students to understand and follow him.


The programmes initiated on 1stOctober, 2019 with the inauguration of Philatelic exhibition on the theme‘Mahatma Gandhi & his values’ in collaboration with Office of Post Master General, Mumbai Region which was on display till 6thOctober 2019. A spinning wheel (Charakha) exhibit was specially displayed during this exhibition. Also, a holographic exhibit showing the virtual bust of Gandhiji was a special attraction for visitors during the period. 14773 visited the exhibition. Also an Elocution Contest on theme ‘Why should we ban single-use plastic’ for high school students was also organised on 1stOctober 2019 Human Chain Formation at Worli Sea beach in association with National Association for the Blinds (NAB) was the main attraction of the programme, arranged on 2ndOctober 2019 to mark Gandhi Jayanti. The programme was well-received by school children from various schools, the general public and visually impaired children from NAB. They enchanted slogans on maintaining cleanliness, tree plantation, save water etc. On 3rdOctober 2019, drawing contest on theme ‘Swachha Bharat’ &‘Remembering Mahatma’ was arranged for high school students followed by a Fancy Dress Contest for primary school children on the theme ‘I am Mahatma Gandhi’. Participants wore Gandhiji’s attire and also delivered his famous dialogues during their one-minute presentation. A popular talk on ‘Gandhi : Life & Work’ was organised on 4thOctober 2019 delivered by Shri Jayant Diwan, famous Gandhian Activist & Head, Sarvodaya Mandal, Mumbai. Around 200 students attended the lecture. The Centre for the first time organised Interschool Band Competition for schools. The school students in band uniform presented a musical patriotic tune during their stage performance. This contest was followed by prize distribution and valediction function. Prizes in the form of books, trophies and certificates were distributed to the winners of various contests. All the participants for various programmes and competitions were requested to bring single-use plastic trash to put into trash bins in Science Centre during ‘Dispose your plastic trash’ drive. The children responded positively to our urge and made the drive successful.



Two (2) Sci-Birthdays were celebrated at our Centre on 2nd& 12thOctober 2019. Total 50 people participated in the program. Special science demonstrations and science activities were performed by the kids. They made vibrating snake, slime, paper helicopter and paper rocket as take away activities.


Regional Level Science Drama Festival

Regional Level Science Drama Festival (NSDF) was organised on 3rdOctober 2019 in collaboration with Deputy Director of Education Office, Mumbai. 10 Schools from Mumbai Region actively took part in the Festival.


Curiosity Carnival by Agastya International Foundation

The Centre has participated in the Curiosity Carnival organised by Agastya International Foundation at NSCM by way of organising a workshop on theme ‘Make & Take’ during 3rd to 6thOctober 2019. Around 1814 children from BMC schools participated in this workshop.


Winter Internship program

Total 3 students (2 girls and 1 boy) of MD College, Parel have joined for the winter internship program for 15 days at our centre from 29thOctober to 14thNovember, 2019. They will be working on scientist article writing work which is being developed for an upcoming exhibit.


Underprivileged visits

15 NGO’s and BMC Schools visited the Centre during the month. 2264 students during which children visited various galleries of the Centre along with all the facilities free of cost including Science Odyssey, Science on Sphere, Spark theatre, Science shows etc. 50 science kits and refreshment were distributed among the children.


Scifari – A Literature and Story-telling Festival for Children was organised at the Centre by ‘Peek A Book’ & Usha Venkatraman, a renowned story teller. The Centrehas participated in the Festival by way of organising Liquid Nitrogen show for around 1558 children.



Workshop on Drones

Drones workshop was conducted at Innovation Hub on 19thOctober 2019. The students were given exposure to the basic principles of flight, the four basic forces acting on a flying object, various parts of the drone and their functions. They also learnt the assembly of a drone kit and learnt to manoeuvre the drone. Followed by the workshop a quiz was conducted based on the learnings from the workshop. 17 engineering students and 39 member students of IH participated in the workshop.


Industry Orientation Project

Mumbai University has an Extension Activity for degree college students. Under this activity the students can take up Industry Orientation project wherein they are expected to complete 150 hours of work in a company/organization. D. G. Ruparel College requested us to give opportunity to their 7 students to work at the Centre.  These students will interact with the visitors and explain the exhibits to them during Diwali vacation.


Vigilance Awareness Week (28th October – 2nd Nov. 2019)

The nation is commemorating Vigilance Awareness Week with an objective to raise public awareness against the threat posed by corruption and to make citizens conscious of their right to live in a corruption free society and to inculcate moral values, ethics etc among school students. The theme of Vigilance Awareness Week is “Integrity-A way of life.”  The Centre is commemorating the programme by organising various activities and programmes during 28thOctober till 2ndNovember 2019. The programmes initiated with integrity pledge administered by Director, NSC, Mumbai for NSCM staff. Daily films shows, drop your slogan contest and open house quizzes are being organised on this year’s theme for school students and general visitors. In all 451 visitors and College students participated in these programmes (data till 30th Oct.). A panel discussion, Drawing & Essay contests are being organised on the theme for students, staff and general public on 31st October & 1st November, 2019 respectively.A Workshop on ‘Innovative ways to stop corruption’ is also  being organised for the students & general visitors on 2ndNovember 2019 followed by Prize Distribution & valediction function.


Observance of National Unity Day (Rashtriya Ekta Diwas)

To mark the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhai Patel, National Unity Day was observed at the centre on 31st October, 2019. On the occasion a unity pledge was administered to all the Officers and Staff members. After the pledge, Human Chains by the staff members and general visitors were also formed by joining the hands together respectively. Liquid Nitrogen shows were also conducted for the visitors. Around 78 general visitors attended the programme.


Package Tour

During the month, 11 package tours were organized for 2218 students and teachers. They were given the guided tour of the galleries. Science shows, and Science on a Sphere shows were also organized.
