Vigilance Awareness Week on theme ‘Integrity - a way of life’

As a part of observance of Vigilance Awareness week on the theme ‘Integrity - a way of life’, drawing and essay writing contests ware organised on 1st Nov. 2019 to mark the event on the mentioned theme. In all 30 children and parents participated in the contests. Popular talk on theme ‘The use of Information Technology for reducing the corruption’ was arranged on 2nd Nov., delivered by Dr.Hiren Dand, Coordinator of department of IT at Mulund College of Commerce. 176 audience including students, parents & teachers attended the lecture. The programme was followed by a prize distribution and valediction function. Prizes in the form of books and certificates were distributed to the winners of various contests. A panel discussion was also organised on 31st Oct. for school, college and general visitors on mentioned theme in active collaboration with NTPC & IDF. Ms Riddhi Mishra, Additional Commissioner of Income Tax (Vigilance) Unit, Income Tax Office, Mumbai, Ms. Sonia Golani, Author, Entrepreneur & Joint Secretary, FICCI FLO, Mumbai, Dr.A.P.Jayaraman, Past Chairman, Indian Institute of Materials Management, Mumbai Chapter, Ms Vibhuti Agrawal, LLM, Advocate & Mr.M.I.Ramachandran, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, Mumbai were among the distinguished panelists. Mr Mrityunjay Bose, Chief of Bureau, Deccan Herald, Mumbai moderated the discussion. 72 audiences were present during the panel discussion.


International Science Centre & Science Museum Day and Anniversary Day of Nehru science Centre

International Science Centre & Science Museum Day and also the Anniversary Day of the Centre was celebrated at the Centre during 10th –11th November 2019. On 10th November, a workshop on Do it Yourself a take home activity was organised for school students of std. 7th -9th in which 285 students participated.. Film on Gravity was screened in the auditorium of the Centre for the general public. 162 people watched the film show. The film show was followed by open house quiz for students and public. Prizes were given to the participants on the spot for giving the correct answer. 65 visitors participated in the quiz. The quiz was followed by Liquid Nitrogen demonstration. 230 visitors enjoyed the demonstration. In the evening sky observation programme was organised . People enjoyed viewing Moon, Jupiter and Saturn through the telescope. 165 people observed these celestial bodies. In all 907 visitors including students and public participated in the programmes. On 11th November, 2019, anniversary day of the Centre was celebrated by organising paper rocket and water rocket workshops for the school students. Students made paper and water rocket models and launched them successfully. 63 students in paper rocket and 56 students in water rocket workshop participated.


Launch of Marathi booklet on MSE ( Curriculum based) and Inauguration of Vigyan Mela

The Centre in association with Rajiv Gandhi Science and Technology Commission (RGSTC) and Mumbai Grahak Panchayat, Palghar Vibhag organised a Vigyan Mela during 14th & 15th November, 2019 at Adarsh Vidya Mandir, Kelve Beach, kelve, Distrit Palghar.The Vigyan Mela was inaugurated by the Chief Guest Padma Vibhushan Dr. Anil Kakodkar, Chairman, RGSTC & Former Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission, Govt. of India on 14th November, 2019 in august presence of the Guest of Honour Dr. Bal Phondke, Member, Executive Committee, NSC, Mumbai and Former Director, CSIR-NISCAIR, New Delhi and distinguished  dignitaries Shri Anil Manekar, Former DG, NCSM & Member Secretary RGSTC, Govt. of Maharashtra, Advocate Shirish Deshpande and Shri Vijay Save, Karyadhyaksha, Mumbai Grahak Panchayat. On the occasion of Vigyan Mela, Marathi booklet on MSE (Curriculam based) was also launched at the hands of Chie Guest. During Vigyan Mela, 2 buses of Nehru Science Centre on the theme curriculum based and Health and Sanitation were kept on display for the visitors. In addition to the exhibition buses, stalls of do it yourself, make and take activities were also kept on display for the visitors. Science film shows and in the evening sky observation programmes through telescopes were also organised.


Children’s Day Celebration

Children’s Day was celebrated at the Centre on 14th November, 2019 by organizing the guided tour visit of the Science for Children and Pre-historic animal life galleries. A science show on fun science was organised. 61 children participated in the programme.


Mobile Science Exhibition on Curriculum based in Palghar District

2nd phase of Mobile Science Exhibition (MSE) on curriculum based has started in the schools of Palghar district from 14th November, 2019. During the month, the MSE bus has covered 7 sites. The exhibitions will be organized till last week of January 2020.


Public Lecture on Silicon Valley

The Centre organised a public lecture on 15th November, 2019. Prof. Shivanand Kanavi, Former VP, TCS & Adjunct Faculty, NIAS, Bengaluru delivered a lecture on the topic “How Indians own the Silicon Valley”. In his lecture, He had highlighted the immense contributions made by Indians to the evolution of Digital Technology: Semiconductors, Microelectronics, Optical Networking, Computing, Telecom and the Internet. On the occasion, Shri R. Ramanan, Mission Director of the Atal Innovation Mission, NITI aayog, Govt. of India, Former MD CMC Ltd. presided over and delivered a popular talk about various aspects of Innovations. About 365 visitors including students and teachers attended the lecture.


Interschool Annual Science Quiz contest

Nehru Science Centre, Mumbai in collaboration with Rotary Club of Bombay Pier and Rotary Club of Bombay Queen City organised the verbal rounds of Inter-school Annual Science Quiz for English and Marathi Medium Schools during 18th – 22nd  November, 2019. During the period 16rounds were organised. In all 204 students from 60 schools participated in the contests. 64 teachers and parents witnessed the quiz rounds.


Mobile Science Exhibition on the theme “Hygiene and Sanitation” in Aspirational district Osmanabad

2nd phase of Mobile Science Exhibition (MSE) after Diwali vacation on the theme “Hygiene and Sanitation” has started in Aspirational district Osmanabad from 20th November, 2019. Till 28.11.2019 the MSE bus has covered 4 sites in Osmanabad district. The exhibition will be organized till first week of February, 2020. Apart from exhibition, science film shows, sky observation, science shows, AR/VR shows etc.are also being organized.


Theme meeting on “Recent Trends in Science Communication

The Centre in collaboration with National Centre for Science Communicators organised a theme meeting on “Recent Trends in Science Communication” on 22nd November 2019 to pay tribute to Dr. G. P. Phondke alias Bal Phondke for his outstanding contributions towards enhancing public understanding of science for over five decades. The programme started with the welcome address and genesis of the theme meeting by the Director, NSCM and Dr. A. P. Jayaraman, Chairman, National Centre for Science Communicators. Dr. Dorairajan Balasubramanian, Distinguished Scientist (& Director of Research Emeritus) Hyderabad Research Foundation, LV Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad delivered the inaugural address. Padma Vibhushan Dr. Anil Kakodkar, Chairman, Rajiv Gandhi Science and Technology Commission & Former Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission, Govt. of India delivered the felicitation address.After the inaugural function various  sessions were organised. Shri Hassan Jawaid Khan,Editor, Science Reporter Chief Scientist, CSIR-NISCAIR, New Delhi conducted the press media session like reporting science in News papers, Popular science magazines and on social media platforms. Shri Pallava Bagla, Photojournalist & Sc.Editor at NDTV & correspondent Science magazine conducted the second session on on electronic Media like Science on Radio, Science through TV & Film, etc. Shri Shivaprasad Khened, Director, NSCM conducted interactive science communication sessions. Dr. Rajendra Shinde, Principal, St. Xavier C ollege and Shri Biman Basu, Former Editor of Science Reporter had conducted the sessions on conversation and Reminiscences by close associates Response from Dr. Phondke. The programme ended with the vote of thanks by Shri Suhas B. Naik-Satam, General Secretary, NCSC, convener, Theme Meeting. About 235 science communicators participated in the programme.



Aviation Day

The Centre in collaboration with Aeronautical Society of India, Mumbai Branch organised Aviation Day programme on 23rd November, 2019 Contests like Inter-school Aviation Quiz, Aviation Elocution Contests on the topics ‘Drone operations in India – its merits and demerits and “Chandrayaan 2 and beyond”. .Aviation Essay contest on the topic “Indian Civil Aviation- Looking back and forward” was also organised for junior college students. In aviation quiz, 136 students from 34 schools, whereas in Elocution, 31 students from 31 schools and in essay, 14 students from 14 colleges participated. In all about 300 students, teachers, parents and members of Aeronautical Society of India participated in the programme.


Launching of new large format Film titled “Dolphins” in Science Odyssey

The Centre launched a new large format film “Dolphins” on 23rd November, 2019 in its Science Odyssey facility. The Chief Guest Shri Satish Maneshinde, an eminent Lawyer inaugurated the film.  The 40 minutes film offers a fascinating new perspective on the lives of dolphins and their remarkable intelligence especially their complex communication activities.   About 195 visitors attended the inaugural show.


Outreach programme at Chembur Mumbai

Centre actively participated in the science exhibition organised by St. Gregorious School, Chembur Mumbai on 23rd November, 2019 by displaying 10 portable science exhibits in an exhibition. About 350 students and teachers visited the exhibition.


International Science Film Festival

Nehru Science Centre in collaboration with Goethe Institut Max Mueller Bhavan organised International Science Film Festival during 25th - 30th November, 2019 on theme Humboldt and the web of life. The festival was inaugurated on 25th Nov by Ms. Smita Vats Sharma, DG, Films Division of India. Mr. Bjorn Kettels, Director, Goethe Institute was prominently present on the occasion. ‘Earth: The Nature of our Planet - Episode 1: Air' was specially screened after the inaugural function. During 25-20 November, films were selected by the schools from a bouquet of 25 Internationally acclaimed films divided in four categories viz: Early Learners (Age group 5 to 8 years), Primary School (Age Group 9 to 11 years), Secondary Schools (Age Group 12 to 16 years) & University and General Public (Age Group 17+ years) were screened for the student participant. Till 28.11.2019, 11 film shows were organised for 1645 students. 424 visitors on 29.11.2019 have booked for the film festival. Each film was accompanied by a corresponding activity arranged for participants after screening the films.


Constitution Day celebration

Nehru Science Centre Mumbai has celebrated 70th Constitution Day (Samvidhan Diwas) of India on 26th November 2019 to commemorate the adoption of the Constitution of India. Article 51A in The Constitution Of India 1949 mentions about development of the scientific temper and the spirit of inquiry; Science Centre organised a special science versus miracle show for students to create scientific awareness among them. A Children Film Society of India’s (CFSI) special film titled ‘26th January’ was screened for the participants which is based on the making of Constitution of India.  Open House Quiz and Written Quiz were also organised. In all 1 59 students and general visitors participated in the programme.



During the month, 6 Sci-birthday programmes were organised at the Centre. 175 kids, their parents along with the host participated in the programme. The participants were taken to various facilities of the centre & special shows. They were also given hands-on activities.


Package Tour

During the month( upto 28th November, 2019) the Centre has extended the facility of package tour on advance booking for 4430 students and teachers of 28 schools. Apart from Science Odyssey, Science on a Sphere show, they were given guided tour of the galleries, science shows, visits to innovation hub and spark theatre shows were also organized.
