Workshop on Measure Your Own Carbon Footprint

The workshop was organized on 14th September 2019 for the innovation hub members. During the workshop students were made aware about the daily practices which result into CO2 production. They also used an app to calculate their own carbon footprint and also learnt about what changes in their lifestyle will reduce it. The resource person for the workshop were from the organization Onlyplanet. 19 members participated in the workshop.


Regional Science Seminar, Mumbai Region

Regional Science Seminar for Mumbai region was organized on 13th September 2019 at the Centre in collaboration with Office of Dy. Director of Education, Mumbai. The topic of the seminar for this year is Periodic Table of Chemical elements: Impact on Human Welfare. 11 students from 5 zones of Mumbai regional participated in the event. The seminar was attended by 82 students and teachers.


Hindi Pakhwada

Hindi Pakhwada was celebrated at the Centre during 14th – 28th September, 2019 by organizing various programmes as follows for students, public and the staff members:


1.     Jagruk Mumbaikar Abhiyan on various aspects of security was organised with support from Dy. Collector of Police. Shri Ssantosh Kalapahad, police Shipai and his team conducted the session. 80 staffmembers attended the session. 


2.     Hindi Translation Contest: English toHindi Translation Contest for the Officers and staff members was organised on 24th September, 2019 in which 11 officers & staff members participated.


3.     Hindi Geet Gayan Pratiyogita: Hindi Geet Gayan pratiyogita was organised on 23rd September, 2019. 12 staff members participated in the conntest


4.     Hindi Essay Contest: On 18th September, 2019, Hindi Essay writing pratiyogita for the staff members was organised. The topic of the contest was “Chandrayaan 2 –Challenges and Possibilities. 14 staff members / Officers participated in the contest.


5.     Hindi Karyashala on eTools: Hindi  Karyashala on Karyalayin  Hindi Kamkajme mein eTools ka Upyog was organized at the Centre on 20th  September, 2019 for the Officers and Staff members. Shri Saket Singh Kaurav, Curator, NSC, Mumbai was the resource person for the workshop.  25 Officers and staff members participated in the Karyashala.


Hindi Pakhwada was culminated on 27th September, 2019, cash prizes were distributed to the winners of different contests. 


Flagoff of MSE bus for Osmanabad district

As a part of Aspirational district programme of Osmanabad district, Mobile Science Exhibition bus containing 20 exhibits on the theme Hygiene and Sanitation had been flagged off by Shri S. M. Khened, Director, NSC, Mumbai on 5th September, 2019 from NSC, Mumbai. Along with the exhibition, the bus also contains science demonstration kits, telescope, film shows AR/VR shows. The exhibition started from 7th September, 2019 and it will continue upto 19th October, 2019. During the period the bus will cover 17 sites in Osmnabad district before Diwali vacation. Till 30th September, 2019, MSE was organised at 9-sites for about 8700-people including students, teachers and general public.


Landing of Vikram Lander of Chandrayn 2

Centre in collaboration with national geographic organised the live streaming of Vikram Lander of Chandrayaan 2 on the Moon on 6th September, 2019 at late night. The programme received an overwhelming response, more than 300 generall visitors including print and media people attended the programme and participated in question-answer session to clarify their doubts.


National Conference on ‘India in Space and Nuclear Energy: Achievements & Challenges

The Centre in association with National Centre for Science Communicators, and National Education Society along with Saraswati Vidya Bhavan organised a one day National Conference on  India in Space and Nuclear Energy at Nehru Science Centre on 16th September, 2019. Travelling exhibition by ISRO and  lectures by the distinguished speakers were also organised to pay a Centenary tribute to Dr. Vikram Sarabhai’ to be held on 16th September, 2019 at the Nehru Science Centre, Mumbai. The conference was inaugurated by Ms. Mallika Sarabhai, India’s leading Dancer and Choreographer and in august presence of Prof S M Chitre, Distinguished Professor, Centre for Excellence in Basic Sciences, Mumbai. This was followed by the series of theme lectures like the Many Dimensions of nuclear Energy by Dr. R. Chidambaram, Space Technology and Development by A. S. kiran Kumar, It is time to look back and look ahead by Dr Y. S. Rajan, Strategic Nuclear Technology Management by Dr. Srikumar Banergee, Valued Reminiscence of our association with Dr. Vikram Sarabhai by Ms. Sudha Vasant Gowariker (by sending her message in the conference),Science and Agriculture Policies by Dr. Ashok Dalwai, IAS, Science and Society Interaction by Dr. A. P. Jayaraman and a public talk by Dr. Kiran Karnik, Former Chairman, NASSCOM. About 250 invitees attended the programme.


ISRO Mega Exhibition

Centre in collaboration ISRO organised a mega Space Exhibition during 15th – 17th Sepptember, 2019 at the centre. The exhibition highlights history and various space missions o ISRO. The exhibition has rocket models, static panels, launch vehicles and satellites, showcasing ISROs work. During these 3 days about 8597 visitors visited the exhibition.


DAE Exhibition on Vikram Sarabhai

  As a part of centenary celebration of the visionary great scientist Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, centre in collaboration with Dept of Atomic Energy organised an exhibition on Nuclear Energy at the Centre during 16th – 17th September, 2019. The exhibition talked about the roadmap of DAE, nuclear programme, use of nuclear energy for the welfare of mankind, etc. about 6070 visited the exhibition.


Inauguration of Sparkling High Voltage Lab

The new unique facility Sparkling High Voltage Lab was inaugurated at the centre on 20th September, 2019. Dr. Vasant hinde Director General, National Maritime Heritage Complex, Gandhinagar inaugurated the facility. The facility consists of High voltage step-up transformer, an apparatus called Horn gap display,Jacob’s Ladder, an exhibit called Litchenberg figures showcases the formation of fractral pattern, High frequency, high voltage Tesla coil, Farday’s Cage, etc. 110 students and public attended the inaugural show. 


Observance of Swachhta Pakhwada

The Centre observed Swachhta Pakhwada during 16th – 30th September, 2019 by organizing various educational activities and programmes for the students, staff and general public, as follows. The programme initiated with Swachhata Pledge by the officers and staff members on 16th September 2019.


1.     Screening of short films on ‘Swachh Bharat Mission’

The short films on Swachh Bharat Mission were screened in the reception area of the centre for the visitors including student, teachers and general visitors during 16th – 30th September, 2019. 30 film shows were screened, about 1200 visitors watched the show. 


2.     Drop your slogan contest

Drop your slogan contest was organized at the Centre for the visitors from 16th – 20th September, 2019. During the period, 136 visitors have dropped their slogans in the drop box. Prizes will be given to the winners of this contest on the concluding day of Swachhta Pakhwada.


3.     Open house quiz

On 17th and 18th September, 2019, 2 open house quizzes for student and general visitors were conducted at the Centre. Questions related to Swachh Bharat Mission were asked to the individuals and prizes were given to the visitors on the spot for the correct answers. About 90 students and general visitors participated in the quiz.


4.     Slogan writing contest

Slogan writing contest on the topic ‘Swachh Bharat Mission’ was organized on 19th September, 2019 in which 26 students participated.


5.   Swachhta Signature Campaign: Swachhta Signature Campaign was organised at the centre from 16th – 20th September, 2019. About 600 visitors participated in this programme by taking a Swachtta Pledge and putting their signature on the flex.


6.   Dadar Beach Cleaning programme:

On the occasion of International Beach Cleaning Day, and also as a part of Swachhta Pakhwadda, Dadar Beach cleaning programme was organised on 21st September, 2019. About 419 school students, volunteers and staff members participated in beach cleaning programme.


7.   Street Plays

During Swachhta Pakhwada street plays were organised by the 3 organisations namely Natyashala Charity Trust, Mumbai, BMC group and Salaam Bombay Foundation, Mumbai on 20th , 24th and 27th September, 2019 respectively. Each organisation enacted 3 shows each. In all 9 street play shows were enacted for the students and the general public at the centre and outside near Mumbai University. About 450 students and public enjoyed the street plays.


8.   Popular Talk

The programme was culminated on 30th September, 2019 by organising a popular talk on the topic “Carbon neutrality with sustainable solution”. The talk was delivered by Mr. Srikant Parab, Mentor, Clean Wo Go – NGO. He talked about different solutions of reducing Carbon dioxide level in the atmosphere. 2 street plays were also organised. After the lecture, prizes were given to the winners of different competitions. About 245 students and teachers attended the programme.


In addition to the above programmes, regular cleaning of the premises, galleries, exhibit development labs, administration area, science odysee, etc. was carried out during the Swachhata Pakhwada. Flex / banners of Swachh Bharat Mission with SBM logo & slogans were also displayed in the premises of the Centre. On 16th September 2019 Swachhata Pledge was taken by all officers & staff members of the Centre.


Inauguration of Interschool Annual Science Quiz 2019-20:

Nehru Science Centre, Mumbai in active collaboration with Rotary Club of Bombay Pier and Rotary Club of Bombay Queen City organised a Written Elimination Round of Interschool Annual Science Quiz for English and Marathi Medium Schools on 28th September 2019.

The programme initiated with an Inaugural function graced by Rtn Girsh Agarwal, President, Rotary Club of Bombay Quen City and Rtn.Rupen Doshi, President, Rotary Club of Bombay Pier. The Chief Guest of the function was Rtn. Sunil Mehra, District Governer Elect (District 3141), also dignitaries from both the Rotary Clubs were prominently present on the occasion.

The Inaugural function was followed by a Written Elimination Round in which a team of two students each from 28 Marathi & 147 English medium Schools took part. In all 615 students, teachers and parents attended the programme.


Exposure visits to the Innovation Hub

To create awareness among students and teachers about the facilities available at the Innovation Hub, exposure visits to the innovation hub were organised. During the month 1462 students and teachers from 15 schools were given exposure to the innovation hub.


Mobile Science Exhibition (MSE) in Kolhapur District

During the month Mobile Science Exhibition on Curriculum-Based was organized at 8 schools of Ahmednagar district for 17 days. Along with the exhibition science film shows, science demonstration lectures were also organised for the students, teachers and general public.


Science Film Festival

Science Film Festival was organised at the Centre in collaboration with Sony, BBC from 9th – 28th September 2019. During the month, 8 film shows were organised for the school students for duration of one hour each in the auditorium of the Centre. 246 students viewed the films selected by the school.


Teachers’ training programme

Teachers training programme was organised at the centre from 23rd – 27th September, 2019. 23 trainee teachers from Lords Universal College of Education participated in the programme. During the period 16 kits (4 sets) of the following models have been fabricated.

1. Principle of lever, 2. Area of a circle, 3. To find the value of pia, 4. Convection current and Archimedes’ principle.

In addition to this they were exposed to the various facilities of the centre, like Science on a Sphere, science demonstration lectures, spark theatre, high voltage demonstration lab, etc. They were also introduced to various types of tools. Special session on uses of space science and technology for education was also organised for them. 


Workshop with BIS:

The Centre in collaboration with Bombay International School (BIS) organised a one day CAS workshop (Creativity, Activity, Service) for special & divyang children on 23.09.2019. 35 underprivileged children of NGO ‘Seva Sadan’ actively participated in the programme. 10 students from BIS & 4 teachers helped these children to make science kits viz: straw blower & fun with friction. The material was provided by NSC. Children enjoyed fun science experiments followed by a hands-on session.



The Centre had organised 7 SCI-Birthday programmes during the month. 225 kids their parents along with the host participated in the programme. The participants were taken to various facilities of the Centre special shows. They were also given hands-on activities.


Visits of Underprivileged Children

During the month, 9  underprivileged children visits were organised . 1083 underprivileged students and teachers from various institutes / NGOs visited the Centre and  were given exposure to the various facilities at the centre under this scheme. Guided tour to the galleries, Science Odyssey show, Science on a Sphere show and Science Shows were organised for these children. They were also provided books/kits.


Package Tour

During the month, 15 package tours were organized for 1742 students and teachers. They were given the guided tour of the galleries. Science shows, and Science on a Sphere shows were also organized.
